When to consider an S corporation election

A discussion trigger, not an internet formula based on revenue alone.

The short answer

Consider a professional analysis when the LLC has consistent profit, an owner actively works in the business, payroll and added administration are supportable, eligibility is clear, and the total tax and compliance result may justify the change.

It is a tax election

An eligible LLC may elect corporate classification and S corporation status. The LLC does not become a different state-law entity merely because the federal tax treatment changes.

Model the whole result

Compare payroll, reasonable compensation, employment taxes, retirement contributions, state treatment, professional fees, cash flow, and administrative work rather than using a single revenue threshold.

Check eligibility and timing

Form 2553 has eligibility, consent, effective-date, and filing-timing rules. Late-election relief may apply in some cases, but should not be the plan.

Coordinate implementation

If elected, update payroll, bookkeeping, owner-payment rules, estimated taxes, tax calendar, and recordkeeping so operations match the new treatment.
