How LLC owners pay themselves

Why the answer follows tax classification, role, and the character of the payment.

The short answer

There is no universal “LLC paycheck.” The correct treatment depends on federal tax classification, whether the owner works in the business, the type of payment, and the company’s agreements and records.

Start with tax classification

Determine whether the LLC is treated as disregarded, partnership, S corporation, or C corporation for federal tax purposes. That classification changes the available payment methods and forms.

Separate payment types

Compensation for work, owner draws, partnership distributions, guaranteed payments, expense reimbursements, loan repayments, and property distributions are not interchangeable labels.

Follow the agreement and approvals

Payments should be consistent with the operating agreement, ownership economics, available cash, tax obligations, and any required member approval.

Get the system reviewed

Owner compensation and distributions are an area where bookkeeping, payroll, tax returns, and legal documents need to agree. Have a qualified tax professional configure the method.
